Water Experiments for Kids

At Rainbow Palace, we make it to a point that your child learns while having fun. That is why here are some interesting water experiments that you and your child will definitely enjoy at home!

  • Put a single drop of food coloring into a glass of water. Don’t stir or shake, just watch what happens. The effect you see is called diffusion.
  • Drop water onto a penny using a medicine dropper. Put one drop at a time. Observe how many drops the penny will hold before the water spills, and you will be amazed! You can also try this with a small amount of detergent mixed into the water.
  • Dunk colanders and sieves in water, and then pour water through funnels. Observe how the size of the holes makes the water flow faster.
  • Simulate erosion by pouring water onto a “mountain” of sand or dirt. This is an experiment to find out whether some soils resist erosion better than others.
  • During bath time, select some household objects, and then test which will sink and which will float.
  • Make a boat from a margarine tub. Find out how many pennies it can hold before it sinks.
  • Test different types of sponges to see which hold more water.
  • Make an apple float on fresh water, then make it float higher by adding salt to the water.
  • Orange floats on water, however it sinks without its peel. Build an artificial peel that can make it float again.
  • What happens when salt dissolves in water? Make some salt water, and then leave it in a warm place for a few days. Observe what happens.
  • Can water move uphill? Cut a strip of coffee filter paper or a paper towel. Hold the strip so the bottom barely touches the surface of the water. Build a tower of sugar cubes in a shallow dish, and then add a little colored water in the bottom. Observe what happens.
